Iron Bacteria in Northern Ohio 7

The evidence of iron bacteria that most thrills me is the iridescent film that Leptothrix discophora forms on top of water, shown in the previous six posts. But often the iron oxide that some iron bacteria leave behind is visible without the presence of the oil-slick-looking film, as here. I especially like the way it looks along cracks in shale bedrock.
