Thanks, Alastair. It took a lot of luck. I was trying to catch the ice falling into the water (and failing) when I accidentally pressed the shutter. It turned out to be the exact time for such an accident.
It was mysterious to me, too. At first I didn’t realize what was happening. And I nearly despaired of being able to photograph what I saw. Photography is so often a matter of luck.
Nice catch, Linda. Thanks for the explanation of what is going on though…when I first saw it I thought someone was skipping stones and wondered how you caught the three splashes and stopped the motion at the same time.
