I guess they have died and lost their turgor. Why they died is another question, maybe it is part of their normal life cicle?

Oh! (Obviously, I’m responding in reverse order—saw Andy’s comment first.) I had to look up “turgor.” OK, if the plant cells have lost their turgor, then the drought may be responsible after all! The drought may also be responsible for their deaths. Thank you, nannus!

Oh, I like that, Andy: grass waves. You might be right about the wind or rain or both. I can’t think of anything else myself. We haven’t had (until yesterday) much rain at all all summer, though. Hard to imagine that drought would make the grass lie down.
