Someone Was Picking Apples

February 24, 2014

When I saw these ladders in the apple tree down the road from where I live this past August, I thought the scene looked so old fashioned. But the downloaded photo didn’t have the feeling I wanted. So I fooled around with it, desaturating the colors a bit, darkening the edges, and giving it an allover warmer color cast. Now it doesn’t look like what I saw, but it feels like what I saw.

Hi Linda – beautiful photo, and it definitely feels darkly romantic to me – as if there are people just out of the frame doing — what? It would be interesting to see the original shot to see how you altered it. This one is a work of art for sure.

    • Thank you, Patricia. I’m so glad you like it. It’s a bit different for me.

  3. I like your distinction between the photo looking like what you saw v. feeling like what you saw. I’ve never heard it put quite that way before, but it sums up almost every photo that I’ve ever posted!

I also like the vacant ladders.

  4. We used to see a lot of these ladders in the orchards here but now they have a machine that picks the apples. It’s not as photogenic, though.

    • This may once have been part of a whole orchard (otherwise, why would the people have these very tall ladders?), but now it’s just a tree in the front yard of an old house. This part of Ohio does have many fruit-tree orchards, and they probably use machines for picking, too. Agree: would not be as photogenic.
