Heiser Pond in Snow
February 21, 2021
We’ve been having fluffy snow, a little every day, for about a week. Not a lot of blue sky, but the snow keeps things bright. It’s lovely—if you can stand the cold.

I’m looking at these on my phone this morning and the photos show up one under another. I particularly like the way the penultimate two (5 & 6) show together. There is a natural looking perspective to them. All beautiful as always.

Thanks, Alastair. I thought the last three, more than the others, let you understand that you were looking at a pond, so I put them one after the other to reinforce the notion.

Snow naturally conceals a lot, and in so doing lends itself to minimalist nature photographs like the ones you’ve shown here.

Yes, snow simplifies a composition by eliminating a lot of detail.

Lovely set of shots and if I had to pick a favourite it would be the first one. It’s minimal and also engaging. Great stuff 🙂

Thanks, PC. The first is my favorite, too. (That’s why I put it first.) It’s also the first photograph I took in this series.

Interesting that the first photograph of the set turned out to be your favourite. It’s nice when you see a shot and capture it first time 🙂👍
When posting multiple images I often put my favourite of the group as the first. It’s the one that displays on the front page of my blog so that too is sometimes a consideration. Sometimes the order in which I publish posts containing just single images will be influenced by how they will sit together on the main page.
Have a great week.

Fantastic, Linda. I like each one very much. The opening photo is special for that straight line – it really sets off the weeds, or should I say wildflowers. The way they appear to be all lined up in a row contrasts nicely with the rest of the photos. I’m glad you kept the snow really white, too. I looked at photos of snow earlier today where the snow was medium gray and it just didn’t feel like snow. These do. You made great use of the elongated rectangular frames, too. The flow in #6 is wonderful – #5 too. Overall, there’s a positive feeling to these, like someone was feeling pleased and happy. 🙂

Thanks, I’m glad you like these, Lynn. Pleased and happy? I took these photos on two different days. These are the first photos I have taken using manual focus with the weather below freezing. The first day, I was wearing those Freehands gloves, which do not keep your hands warm, especially if you leave your trigger finger and thumb exposed to work the focus ring. Also, they are not very flexible. I could hardly turn the focus ring because my hands were stiff and the cold weather prevented the focus ring from freely turning. My face mask kept fogging my glasses. I was never sure I had anything in focus. The second day, I wore my Polartec-type gloves, which are flexible and keep my hands warm. My glasses still fogged up from breathing into the face mask, which, like on the first day, I wore intermittently for warmth. The second day was sunny. I hate to bad mouth the sun, but it turned my photo-grey eyeglass lenses so dark that I couldn’t see the settings when I looked through the view finder, including the little dot that appears when focus is achieved. Although the focus ring was marginally easier to turn because the temperature was a bit higher, again I didn’t know if anything was in focus when I clicked the shutter. I was pleased and happy that I could see compositions in the viewfinder. And I was pleased and happy when I downloaded. In fact, very pleased and happy. But in between? Harrumph. Something someone else said on their blog (maybe Steve Gingold?) made me fill out the histogram to the right with the tone curve; that’s why the snow is white.

Yikes I’m behind…wow, it’s not easy, is it!!? Frozen fingers, foggy glasses, difficulty with the focus ring….it makes Florida look good, doesn’t it? 😉 Anyway, I like having the snow bright that way, it makes for nice graphics and it’s closer to the way I remember snowy scenes. The bright whites and sunlight are probably a large part of what gave me the happy feeling. Whatever works!

No, not easy, but the below-freezing weather is pretty much over now. I think. We had snow flurries today, but nothing stuck. So glad to give you a happy feeling!

Thank you, John. We’ve had a little warm spell the last few days, and the pond looks quite different now.

I really like the whole bunch of these, Linda. The grasses all look so nice with the snow hiding what would ordinarily compete for our attention. If I have to pick favorites, which I know I don’t but will anyway, they would be #’s 1 and 5. Some lovely images!, all! 🙂

Thank you, Steve. Snow is great for hiding messes, isn’t it. Too bad dust doesn’t exactly work the same way indoors. And was it you who talked about filling out the histogram to the right with the tone curve?

I don’t think so, Linda. But it is good practice when appropriate.
