Missing the Madison Brass Works

In 2008 the Madison Brass Works building was not what many other people would call attractive. Well, you know the rest. I spent considerable time entranced by this window that July. Alas, revisiting the building will not allow my continued enjoyment, at least of this window. This is how the building looks now.

Excellent series, Linda. Some of the detail shot remind me of your iron bacteria work. These subtle colors and textures are absolutely wonderful.

Thank you, Ken. I was going to post only the first photograph in a mix of other photographs of windows. But I wound up going to the folder with that photo and saw all the close-ups that I hadn’t worked with. Spent a good long time last night indulging myself in them. It’s interesting that you find similarities here with my iron bacteria images. Lynn (Bluebrightly) has found correspondences between other bodies of my work. Maybe I just have one or two stories to tell and do it in different ways.

Ah, progress. This could be a lesson in always trying to work with a subject when you see it, and not putting off photographing something until another time. And good thing you did that! I’m glad you showed the whole window. It’s interesting that just where the building is painted a darker gray (around the window), the light fades too, across the glass.
So I’m to understand that they actually patched the glass bricks with more glass? Who woulda thought?
Favorites? Maybe the first and last (1st being the whole window) , and the second, eighth and ninth. But I like seeing all of them.

I agree that it’s a lesson for immediate action, and I’d extend the lesson to shooting as soon as you think you see a possible photograph. Sometimes when I go closer or move to one side or another—thinking that’s where the photograph is—I lose what attracted me in the first place. Having that first photo to refer to can help regain the spark. I noticed that part about the gray paint, too. Funny. And yes, I think they did patch the glass with glass. How I wish I could go back and shoot every single glass block. I wonder if that would change your favorites. 😉

If you had a chance to go back and do it again, yes, I bet my favorites would be different, becasue you’d do even better. What you say about losing what attracted you in the first place, just by moving around – that’s interesting.
