Ohio Ice and Snow 1
March 19, 2017
It snowed here in northeast Ohio the day after I arrived back. Made it out with the camera Thursday to catch some of it before it disappeared. I left our place thinking about snow, but as I walked past Rock Pond, I was seduced by ice. Oh, yeahhhh, ice. Almost forgot about it.
I didn’t see that the little ice circles were held above the water until the last photo. That’s such an interesting phenomenon – I remember seeing surprisingly big chunks caught on branches and overhanging a pond on Long Island one winter.

I wish I knew how this happens. I used to think that the water level dropped after some ice formed. I don’t think that anymore, but I have no other hunch to take the place of that theory. I know a physicist who lives nearby; I wonder if he’d have any idea . . .

I like the ice shots, too. We seldom get that crystal clear ice you have here, though.

Thanks, Ken. All the ice on the edges of the pond was not clear like this, as you’ll see in the coming days.
