Home Sweet Home (Hello) 5

These are last year’s seed pods of a plant my botanist husband tells me is a relative of milkweed. Commonly called dogbane, it’s in the genus Apocynum. David says he would have to see the flowers to know if it is Apocynum androsaemifolium or Apocynum cannabinumBoth are poisonous, but Wikipedia says A. cannabinum also has medicinal uses. Both have been harvested for their fiber, which has properties similar to those of hemp.

  1. Dogbane, yes. Those family resemblances makes sense most of the time – you can see the similarity to milkweed. I’ve always liked the linearity of the dogbane pods.

    • I always thought these pods were milkweed-like, but I never knew their name.
