They Breathe Iron: The Formal Announcement
If you’ve read this blog for very long, you know of my passion for evidence of the iron-breathing bacteria, especially the iridescent film of Leptothrix discophora. This January I mentioned that I’d written a book. I promised a more formal introduction to it later, and here it is. After ten years of incubation, They Breathe Iron: Artistic and Scientific Encounters with an Ancient Life Form is ready to live on its own. Clicking on the thumbnail image of the book cover at the bottom of this page takes you to the book’s website, with excerpts and related information. The site includes ten bonus photographs that don’t appear in the book, though you may have seen a few of them here. One of the bonus photos is below. The book’s website doesn’t have Like buttons or places to put comments, but if you’d like to tell me what you think of the new website (and I hope you would), you can let me know on this post.

I agree. Many of the Leptothrix discophora photographs look as if they could have been taken by the Hubble telescope.
