I’ve been to the Schoepfle Garden twice since returning from Florida. Here are some photos from my May 21 walk there. That Saturday the bullfrogs were conspicuous at the Front Pond, where I took the second photo, of a bullfrog embedded in algae. I watched two frogs in what may have been a territorial battle at the edge of the pond. They were leaping into the air and over each other until one scooted a few yards back where he or she had come from. I didn’t think they were exhibiting mating behavior, but the males are supposed to have yellow throats, and one of them did not. Maybe it was a female needing her own space. . . . Our severe rains have stripped a lot of topsoil from beside the river. The third photo shows exposed roots. . . . As you might guess from the muddy water apparent in the fifth photo, the Vermilion River is moving much too fast to support the iron bacteria that fascinate me so. But a few yards up the bank I found some growing in a small slow-moving side stream.
