ICM on the Way Back

October 30, 2023

On the way back from Stoughton (see previous post) I took advantage of my daughter’s driving to point the camera out the window of the passenger’s seat. Sometimes jiggling and sometimes holding the camera still I performed an assisted version of intentional camera movement. ICM gives you a low number of keepers per shutter clicks. That day I took 124 photos for this yield of 12 shareables. After download I fussed with the images in Lightroom.

  1. I’ve sat in the passenger seat taking photos many times and I’ve never taken any as good as these. My hat is off to you, Linda. Well done!
(btw: If I say “Well done” it’s my equivalent of a Paul Hollywood handshake (but without the prestige).

    • Thank you, Ken. I had to look up “Paul Hollywood handshake,” proving your “well done” will always have more prestige than a Paul Hollywood handshake to me.

  2. And I think the low yield makes the keepers feel all the more worthwhile. Well done indeed.

    • Thank you, Johnny Crabcakes. It’s hard to find those keepers, and maybe I do appreciate them more because of that.

  4. You’ve caught a good variety of colors in these keepers. Number 10 is unusual in having that three-dimensional-looking shape, and in having it oriented at such an angle to the overall horizontal flow of the images. Number 12 stands out from the others in being so dark. Can you single out any of the ways you fussed with the images that proved especially effective?

    • Thanks, Steve. The one thing I did with every image that looked at all promising was to move Lightroom’s exposure slider all the way to the left. Probably if I had shot at faster shutter speeds, I wouldn’t have had to do that. In many cases I increased the vibrance. And I cropped. Number 12 was unusual. I did almost nothing to the image; it was dark to begin with. I flipped it horizontally and softened the edges of a very small section that looked too rectangular.

  5. I like every one of your 12 keepers, Linda. You’ve encouraged me to give it a try. I recently purchased a 128gb card so I have 2800 chances at a good one. 🙂

    • Oh, good. I want to see what you come up with. Yeah, out of 2800 shots you should come up with a few good ones. 😉 Thanks for writing, Steve.

  7. Great work and I imagine you had a lot of fun taking these 😀
I particularly like number five. It’s a visual equivalent of restful ambient music. Very nice.
    Cheers

    • Thanks. I did indeed have fun taking these, PC, and maybe even more fun processing them.

  8. I always like to see your explorations in ICM, Linda. I am struck (but shouldn’t be surprised) by how often the colors hold together in spite of losing any indication of their original structure, eg #7, #9, and #12. The fluidity of #3 and #4 reminds me of close-up photographs I have taken of stained glass windows. Nice Set!

  10. It’s a beautiful selection. Having recently gotten back to ICM work, I find these very interesting. I was working on making images that include some anchoring “real world” detail as well as the motion blur. Yours are mostly free of any details. Since I’m feeling the desire for some reality in ICM images, #1 appeals because it seems like a city rushing by. The colors start to get really interesting in #5 – so many hues and shades and tones. There’s a landscape feeling because of the colors at the bottom and a hint of sky above but the reddish tones upset that, which is fine by me. 🙂 #7 feels like a watery wonderland that would be beautiful to get lost in. The waterfall effect and colors in #8 feel good, too. I like #11 for the suggestion of trees and the last photo for the inky darkness and the strange red lines and little rectangle buried in there.
It always fascinates me that you normally hew so closely to the “real world” and then you’re perfectly content to go all the way off the rails with ICM images. Contradictions like that make the world go ’round. 😉

Your handling of intentional movement is so wonderful! I keep trying to figure out what you’re passing to create the colors and waves; and can’t. Which I love! Keep me guessing.
