Old Boats Are Best—2

March 31, 2019

Three days before I photographed old boats following the map that Karen Bell drew for me, I was in Cortez photographing old boats in a different location. So for those of you who didn’t see enough of them in the last post, here are more old boats. If you haven’t already, I urge you to read the comments on the last post. (Scroll way way down.) So many of you with so much to say!

    • Thanks, Harrie. I can’t wait to go back next year. I’m sure there are more boats that I haven’t photographed yet.

    • Thank you, Michael. Glad to do it. Isn’t it interesting how something can stimulate and satisfy at the same time.

  5. Shipworms! Or at least their circular burrows and a valve/shell blocking the entrance of one. Dowels were used to plug up three burrows at the bottom.

    • Oh! I’ve seen holes and plugged holes like these on many old boats in Cortez and not known what I was looking at. Now I know! Thanks, David.

  8. I see so many stories and patterns and colors interwoven in your tapestries. Thanks for sending me back to review the previous post w/comments. Put my brain in motion with only a few creaks or complaints. Lynn struck me with her “So-called outsider art isn’t always noteworthy, but it can be pretty remarkable, without the artist possessing the ability to write coherently.” That old ability to write coherently… if only I had a bit of that. 😀

Shall I pick a favorite… they all take me to different places, so hard to put a good or bad rating. How about the one with the red stripe at the top? I’m a sucker for color… until I get to the next one and that’s a favorite… rinse and repeat!

    • Thank you, Gunta. Weren’t those comments on the last post great? If only I could lay the bed for a conversation like that every time. I agree about Lynn’s comment regarding outsider art.

Don’t feel you have to pick a favorite. I sure don’t!

  9. What a treat this is. (Now what are you going to do? 😉 ) From wood to fiberglass to – metal? – they sing songs that morph all over the place. I do love the one with the fiberglass worn through…and the barnacles and oyster shells (those cool worm casings in #3!!), the mysterious black hole of #5, the variety of paint strokes in #8, the wooden dowel repairs, and the final pair – I see them as a pair – with that elegant, long rectangular format. And last time I didn’t register that Karen made a map for you – wow. Maybe you could send her a print. I am looking forward to your next post, whatever it is. Bring it on!

    • Thanks, Lynn. The last two—and some of the others, if I remember right—are from the same boat, so it would make sense that you’d see them as a pair—even if they weren’t both in elongated format. Right now I’m thinking the next post will be the last of this winter’s fish bins. Then I want to get to some Florida nature before all turns green (and/or iridescent) in Ohio.
