Clay Gully Enchantment

February 20, 2018

If you follow Clay Gully (a tributary of the Myakka River) to one of its tributaries, you come to this place. The close understory that you’ve brushed against all along the path suddenly disappears, and the stream becomes narrower and narrower until spreads out in great pools under towering live oaks. It was too early to see the blue flag irises (Iris virginica) flowering, but their foliage was reaching out from the water earlier this month.

    • Thank you, Dina. This little spot—less than an acre—may be my favorite place in Florida.

    • Thanks, Ken. Imagine walking down a closed-in path and suddenly coming upon this.

  4. Beautiful presentation, words and image! And even kudos from your son – I should tell mine. 🙂 That’s a gorgeous place, and it must feel magical with the approach you describe. I hope you catch the iris…

    • Thank you, Lynn. I tried a little harder with the narrative this time; this place deserves it. It does feel magical. I’m already looking forward to seeing it again next year. I’m afraid I will miss the irises. I leave Tuesday and am in the familiar state of wondering how I will be ready to go by then. So much packing, so many loose ends!

      • Wow, leaving so soon…then you get the full Spring experience in Ohio, which must be underway, though I know it’s been cold. I think it’s time for extra coffee to get those brain cells focused down on the packing. 😉

        • I don’t expect to see much visual spring by March 5, but surely it’s working on a lower level. I’m actually hoping for some fresh snow to photograph. Yes, a boost for packing sounds like a good idea.

What a wonderful, wild Florida spot. Does sound magical. Safe trip home. Looking forward to the Spring you see on the way.

    • Thank you, Patricia. It should be fun to help usher in the spring in Oberlin, and to see its earlier effects on the way.
