Yin, Yang, and the New Yorker

June 13, 2017

The almost yin-yang quality of this soup spill might look like a setup, but I don’t think it is. Whoever was bringing home lunch for her dear spouse (the bottom of the other container is beyond the picture frame) was probably not so happy about spilling it on the street. But as a recent New Yorker cartoon reminds us, tragedy is material.

  1. One person’s disaster is anther person’s opportunity. Well spotted, Linda. And I also see the Yin and Yang.

    • Thank you, Andy. Glad you can see the yin and yang. I was afraid others might not. Nice to know that at least one person does.

  2. I’m not saying you took advantage of someone else’s misfortune but you did get a nice shot.

    • Thank you, Ken. I think I’d be useless as a photographer in the midst of more important disaster. I did, however, photograph my two toddlers having an argument that bordered on physical. When I look at that series of photographs now, decades later, I wonder at my heartlessness.

    • Thank you, Peter. I’m glad the framing seems right to you. I’ve been second guessing myself on this one.

        • I threw out one of the alternatives before snapping the shutter—it didn’t work as a vertical somehow. But I wonder now if I should have left more space around the spill. Ah well. Sometimes I think I go in too close.

  4. Great shot! So easy to walk on by this, but once your eye is sensitized, it’s always roaming around and catching odd bits, isn’t it? I’ve been away for a few days, catching up…

    • You’re right, Lynn. I didn’t see the yin/yang part until I downloaded. Looking forward to seeing what you found while away.
