Recent Finds in Selby Gardens 3

These are some of the buttress roots of the Moreton Bay fig tree (Ficus macrophylla) at Selby. If you click on the image for a larger version, you can just make out an invasive brown anole (Anoles sagrei) about a fourth of the way in from the left and a third of the way up from the bottom of the photograph. Many people around here incorrectly call this lizard a gecko.

Nice close-up! I love these trees and their root systems. I lived in Sydney for a bit and there are many along the harbor in the botanic garden. Incredible.

Thank you, Jane. If you clicked on the first link, you know that this tree is a “native of most of the eastern coast of Australia.” (Or maybe you knew that already.) They must be spectacular in multiples.

I see at least three of them – they are TINY little guys! I love those trees, too. I guess the last time I saw one was when I was in Naples or Fort Lauderdale – somewhere around there. Are you seeing gorgeous birds, too? I don’t expect photos, just tell me about them! 😉 Living vicariously in the PNW….

Not so tiny—about four inches long, including tail. The native ones are a little bigger (and green). Yes, lots of shore birds. The great blue herons around here let you get about three feet close to them as long as you don’t look them straight in the eye. The roseate spoonbills we saw in the Myakka River State Park last month were the big thrill, though. We don’t see them around here that often. Haven’t seen any sandhill cranes yet this year, but I usually see them. We had a rather large egret in the street right in front of our house a couple of weeks ago. And I saw a flock of ibises on a tree lawn yesterday. Will post photos if I take any bird photos that are worthy. Usually, after download, I just say, “Yeah, that’s a bird.”

I did, didn’t I, Andy. That’s sort of surprising: it was around 11 A.M., not the time I usually expect good light. In truth, I had to fuss with the exposure quite a bit and in Lightroom still had to add a brush stroke to tame the highlights.
