Cortez Boat Prow

One month ago, February 1, Janet and I drove up to the fishing village of Cortez. It is still my favorite place to take photographs—if you don’t count Ohio’s Vermilion River when the Leptothrix discophora films are abundant. This boat has seen better days but was still afloat. I think the white stuff is plaster from plasterboard.

Right, Leslie. I’m pretty sure these are interference colors, too. Only instead of the colors’ involving a thin film such as the one Leptothrix discophora produces, they involve polarized light. See http://www.webexhibits.org/causesofcolor/15.html and http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/phyopt/polint2.html. All light is polarized to some extent when it is reflected off a surface. I had a polarizing filter on my cameral lens, and the windshield was reflecting some of the light hitting it. The windshield and the lens filter would be the two polarizers in this case (I think). Believe it or not, I did my high-school physics project on interference colors. Guess I’m still working on that project.
