Amused and Amazed in Pinecraft Park

September 14, 2013

Take a look at this first photograph. Every time I go to Pinecraft Park I’m amazed that such jungle can be found 15 minutes from downtown Sarasota. The park—smaller, I think, than 10 acres—is riddled with criss-crossing paths, but the dense foliage makes the area seem much larger. Janet lost her cell phone there the last time we went, May 12 of this year. With so many winding paths to retrace and so much plant life possibly in the way, she didn’t have much hope of finding it. But another hiker she met on her quest asked her what she was looking for—and soon found it. This park is in the heart of Sarasota’s Amish suburb (about which the New York Times ran a story last year), and during another visit there we met a young Amish man who chatted with us about the birds in the park, somehow adding that he was a certified scuba-diving instructor.

  1. This park looks like my kind of place to photograph. These shots are really very nice. But and Amish scuba diver?

    • Thanks, Ken. Amish and scuba diver surprised us, too, though scuba diver from Ohio alone would have done it.

I have lived in the Sarasota – Myakka City area for a l-o-n-g time, and never knew there was a park in Pinecraft. I have taken the main road (Bahia Vista) through Pinecraft hundreds of time and just never noticed it. I will certainly check it out. Thank you for sharing.

  4. You’re welcome, Sparky. Did you notice in the link to “Amish suburb” that Bahia Vista used to be named Bay Vista? I always wondered why everyone pronounces it “Bay-a Vista” instead of “Ba-hee-a Vista,” and now I think I have my answer. What we can learn from the Internet . . . Enjoy Pinecraft Park!
