The Shale Shores of the Vermilion River

June 24, 2012

When I went to the river yesterday, I had in mind to photograph the shale along the banks of the river. It’s not always a good idea to have in mind what I’m going to photograph. When I do that, I miss things worth photographing and force shots that aren’t ready to be taken. It’s usually better to stay open and let things call to me rather than call to them. But the shale had called the week before. For the most part I had resisted it then to give in to the iron bacteria. Would the shale want me two weeks in a row? Here are five shale photographs from yesterday, followed by one that I didn’t resist taking the week before and another that called the week before that.

    • Thanks, Ken. I think (I hope) I’m emerging from a dry spell.

Love these! Especially the last three–shaded yellow, shaded green and shaded blue-gray. They are wonderful as a trio.

Great! Fantastic abstract designs; would look great blown-up, poster sized.

    • Thanks, Art. I went out today (July 24) and took even more shale photographs, so you will see more. I might be missing a lot of other sights at the river these days; I seem to only have eyes for shale.
