From the Archives of 2006—1

The images I gathered this week—of more Guardians—will have to wait for their appearance on the blog until I process them, which will take some time. Meanwhile here are a few photographs I took at the beginning of 2006 in Sarasota, Florida.
1 The alleys in downtown Sarasota are so much fun.
2 So are the gates in front of many downtown businesses, restaurants, and residences.
3 Remnants of vines also make a grid.
4 These trees in the Myakka River State Park form a three-dimensional grid.
5 It might be stretching it to call these palm-frond pieces a grid. If you’ve followed this blog for very long, you will know that they are accompanied here by a film of Leptothrix discophora.
6 Historic Spanish Point is where I found these L. discophora films.
7 This may be my favorite Sarasota alley.

They may be 14 years old but they make a great gallery of images. Numbers 1, 3 and 4 are my favourites but I very much enjoyed all of them 🙂

Excellent series, Linda. #3 and #9 are fantastic but the laundry shots are wonderful. I never liked ironing so I only ironed the front of my shirts and kept my jacket on (an old USAF trick). When I started working in research it was jeans and sweatshirts under a lab coat (most of the time).

Thanks, Ken. I appreciate your work-arounds. The pandemic encourages others. I’m mostly in sweats and workout clothes all day, now that I don’t go out anymore.

Your #1 and #7 make me think you’d have a photographic field day in countries like the Philippines and India, where chaotic, makeshift outdoor wiring is rampant. You’ve got great curves, stripes, and yin-yang in #12 and 13; what you say about them is funny: “I’d rather photograph my laundry than iron it.” You’ve got great grids, both human and natural, in #2–4.

Yes, I’ve seen the wiring in India, but I’m not sure it’s any more—uh—creative than much I’ve seen in Florida. Glad you enjoyed my humor, Steve. It’s really true: I’d probably rather photograph just about anything than clean it or organize it. Thanks, as always, for commenting.

Wonderfully varied group. Thanks for the excellent Covid diversion.
I enjoyed walking the alleys of Denver and Chicago when I lived there. I miss them in Cleveland.

I just hope that wasn’t a sheet you were going to iron! I remember my mother doing that, back in the days before permanent press. Anyway, the laundry photos are beautiful. Like Adrian, I’m attracted to #7 & #9, and I also love the vine remnants, with their little feet and that wonderful Florida pink wall. It’s fun to see the rare human make an appearance in #8, and fun too, to see the Leptothrix film following you around the country. 😉 I’m looking forward to the guardians.

It was a duvet cover. I’m not sure I ever ironed it. Maybe I just put it on the comforter without ironing. My mother used to iron sheets, too—as did I in the summer, when I was pressed into doing more housework than during the school year. If you look carefully, you can see that #s 7, 8, 9, and 10 were all taken in the same area. About the rare human: I was all set to take that photo when she walked into the frame. Damn, I thought, but recovered in time to press the shutter while she was still there. If I don’t finish processing the new guardians by Sunday, you’ll see more photos from the archives of 2006.
