Downtown Sarasota, the Interesting Parts
November 27, 2011
Janet and I walked around downtown Sarasota this morning, looking for things to photograph that could be construed to fit the theme of “holiday.” We’ve joined a photography meet-up group here, and for the next meeting we are to take photographs of something that says “holiday,” at least to us. Bust. Neither of us felt as if we had nailed it. Most “holiday” things were way too obvious and made boring photographs. But meanwhile, we got to prowl the streets and alleys again, and I found a few nonholiday goodies there, including my old friend the mop girl. I wish I knew for sure what the thing in the third photograph is. I think it has something to do with storm-surge flood control in case of hurricanes, but I really don’t know. Most of these gizmos that I see are horizontal and exposed to the elements, where they take on lovely rusts and other colorations from layers and layers of paint trying to ward off the rust. This vertical one was under a roof and rather pristine. I thought it looked monumental.
